Independence Day is celebrated every year on 15th August. It is on this day in 1947 that India attained independence from British rule after a hard struggle by our national heroes. It is also a national festival of India.

Although, it is a national holiday, the people of the country celebrate with great vigour, enthusiasm and patriotic feelings. Schools, colleges, offices and societies celebrate this day by organizing various events with nationalistic themes. In New Delhi, our Prime Minister unfurls the national flag with a 21 gun salute, while the military band play the national anthem “Jana Gana Mana” in the background. It is followed by a military parade showcasing the defense might and cultural tableau from various state and union territories signifying the diverse culture of India. I, always make it a point to wake up early on this day and watch the live telecast of the celebration, with a small tri-colour hoisted next to the television set.

The main reason for celebration is to remember the supreme sacrifices and lives lost in the freedom struggle. The celebration is also to remind each countrymen that the freedom we enjoy is earned the hard way.

Enjoying our freedom does not mean that we should discard the rights of others around us and live the way we want. The constitution of India guarantees freedom to each and every citizen of the country irrespective of caste, colour, religion, region, language, etc. We have to also consider the rights and feelings of others around us when living our freedom.

Soon after Independence, India has made rapid progress in the field of education, science & technology, agriculture & food processing, manufacturing, infra-structure and man power development through various programs and plans. Yet, there is lot more to be done and it is our national duty to contribute and dedicate ourselves whole heartedly to nation building.

I feel proud to be an Indian. Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!
