Long long ago, India was ruled by Kings. They lived in beautiful palaces and had lots of wealth.

India was rich in grains and spices. People were happy. Far away from India the British Lords came to know about this beautiful country and the wealth we had. They came to visit India in big ships and realized how rich and beautiful India was. They pretended to be friends with the Kings and later started fighting with our kings and conquered their lands and ruled India for centuries. They exploited our wealth and people.

Many leaders came forward to free India from British rule and fight for independence. The leaders and the people suffered a lot at the hands of British. Many leaders and freedom fighters were jailed and killed by the British.

Gandhiji known as “Bapu “was one of the leaders who fought against the British to get independence. Gandhiji protested against British empire with his Non-Violence movement. So many Indians started following Gandhiji against the British Empire. With so many years of fighting we lost many lives. We continued our war against the British until we finally won the independence on 15th August 1947 and became a democratic country.

Gandhiji was named as “The Father of the Nation”. Now India is Independent and We celebrate August 15th of every year as our Independence Day.
