“At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.”-Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru
History classes have always intrigued me. I’ve loved learning about the freedom struggle led by great leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Sarojini Naidu and many more. I am greatly fascinated by the teachings of Gandhiji based on truth and non-violence. I can almost imagine him weaving cloth on his chakra which sits in front of him and protesting against the British rule, silently and non-violently. Speaking about weaving, we’ve all seen the chakra not only in front of Mahatma Gandhi but also in our prestigious National Flag of India or the Tiranga. As we all know our flag is made up of three colours-saffron, white and green. Saffron for the strength and immense courage portrayed by the people of India, white for the peaceful fight for freedom against the oppressive foreign rule and green for the auspiciousness of our nation.
To a foreigner this may seem just any ordinary flag, but to me it’s like a picture that’s worth a thousand words. Behind the tricolour I’m able to see the incalculable determination to not give up on the dream of a free nation to the tyrannical regime. Whenever I visit India and see a monument or a government building, a statue of a freedom fighter or even a little school child cheerfully waving the Indian flag, I’m constantly reminded of the hard work and martyrdom of these great souls. I’m proud to be born into a nation with great achievements merely due to those men and women who refused to give in to the oppression of foreign rulers. India wouldn’t have become what it is today if it wasn’t for them. So, for this Independence Day let us try to set aside all our worries and celebrate this national festival blissfully.
