Weight-loss drug leads to death of a Kuwaiti woman; MoH to investigate

Investigations are underway to look into the recent death of a Kuwaiti woman after allegedly taking an online advertised weight-loss drug promoted by a Fashionista, who claims to be a doctor, said the Health Ministry.

The ministry, in a press statement Friday, advised everyone to steer away from drugs which are sold on social media sites citing health hazards. The ministry had recently adopted a set of measures against unlicensed online advertisements of fake drugs because of the seriousness, safety and quality of health.

It is worth mentioning the ministry has taken several measures against unlicensed advertisements by Fashionistas including the arrest of those who sell fake drugs through constant monitoring and calling on the residents and citizens to cooperate with the ministry and stop buying medicines promoted by websites.

It has been reported the Ministry of Health is in the process of verifying the incident and its causes, noting that the ministry has already taken a number of measures and warned of medicines and medical supplements promoted by some Fashionistas, doctors and companies in violation of the laws in force, including the failure to obtain licenses from the concerned department of the Ministry to promote or advertise their medical products.

But the sources ruled out at the same time that taking slimming pills cannot cause death but can cause complications and death can be caused only in the case of consumption in large quantities.

The sources stressed the ministry has issued instructions for the use of food supplements or any drugs only with the advice of specialists and after conducting necessary medical analysis, for fear it may cause damage to the liver and kidneys and may lead to stroke.
