Holy Month of Ramadan

Sunday, April 28, 2019

Ramadan is one of the 5 pillars of Islam. Muslims all over the world take part by fasting from sunrise to sunset. This year Ramadan falls in the begining of May till June . Ramadan dates change every year. Its determined by the sighting of the new moon. The start and end of Ramadan will be declared a day before.

Fasting during Ramadan is followed very strictly by the Muslims. Elderly, Sick, Pregnant or nursing newborn women are exempted from Fasting. To make up for days they didn't fast, they fast later in the year (either all at once or a day here and there).

Meal taken just before sunrise, before the day of fasting starts is called Suhoor and the meal taken to break the fast after sunset is called Iftar. The first meal of the day which they consume should last until sunset so the food will contain lots of high-protein foods and they drink as much water as possible right up until dawn, after which they cannot drink or eat anything. Muslims break their fast by eating dates before beginning the iftar meal. They continue eating and drinking throughout the night until the next day's suhoor. Suhoor and Iftar meals contain fresh fruits, vegetables, halal meats, breads, cheeses, and sweets. At the end of the Ramadan month, Muslims celebrate the Festival of Fast-Breaking, called Eid al-Fitr.

In Kuwait during Ramadan, drinking and eating in public is considered very offensive and can even attract a fine or a reprimand from the police. If an individual want to eat or drink in daylight hours during Ramadan it has to be done indoors and out of sight. Working hours in public sectors during the holy month of Ramadan is reduced to Four & half hours. Almost all Shops and Restaurants including the ones in the Malls will be closed during the day (Fasting hours). All open only at night around 7 PM and stay open later than usual. Supermarkets stay open throughout the day.
