Some 23 people have been injured or suffered suffocation at a building gutted with fire in Al-Mahboula, south of Kuwait City, on Wednesday.

Kuwait Fire Service Directorate (KFSD) said in a statement that it had received a notification about a fire flare-up at a laundry shop in a building in the seaside district of Al-Mahboula.

Blazes spread to an annex residential facility, stranding more than 100 occupants.

Firemen have rushed to the scene, scurrying to save people stranded in the building upper floors.

The fire has also spread to a nearby store. Amid smoke billowing into the skies, the firemen whisked the injured to ambulances.
