Diwali, also known as Deepawali, is one of the most significant and widely celebrated festivals of India. It is known as the “festival of lights,” it symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The name Diwali originates from the Sanskrit word “Deepawali,” which means a row or a series of lights. It falls between October and November, depending on the lunar calendar. Diwali’s origins are deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and history, with various legends explaining the festival’s significance. One of the most famous legends explain that Diwali represent the birth of goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. The festival is considered an auspicious time to worship goddess Lakshmi and seek her blessings for wealth and success. the celebration of Diwali spans five days each with its own unique rituals and significance. Diwali is more than just a festival; it is a time for families and communities to come together and celebrate. Lighting Diyas and fireworks, the tradition of lighting Diyas and fireworks is central to Diwali. The illumination of homes with oil lamps and lights represents the dispelling of darkness and ignorance. Fireworks add to the festive atmosphere and are believed to ward off evil spirts. Exchanging gifts and sweets, Diwali is time of sharing and spreading joy. People exchange gifts, sweets, and dry fruits with family and friends. Making Rangoli, colorful Rangoli patterns are made at the entrance of homes as a welcoming gesture and to bring good fortune. The designs often include images of flowers, diyas, and geometric patterns. In recent years, there has been increasing awareness about the environment impact of Diwali, particularly due to fireworks, which contribute to air and noise pollution.
Many people are now opting for eco-friendly celebrations by using clay diyas, reducing or eliminating fireworks, and using natural colors for rangoli. Diwali is not just celebrated in India  but also by Indian communities worldwide, In countries like Nepal, sri lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, and Fiji.
