Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is one of the most important festivals for Indians. Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) around the world celebrate Diwali to stay connected to their roots. In places like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, NRIs decorate their homes with diyas and colorful rangoli. By keeping these traditions alive, they bring a little bit of India to wherever they are.

NRIs often celebrate Diwali together as a community, making the festival feel even more special. Many cities have Diwali events with music, dance, and delicious Indian food. These gatherings allow NRIs to dress in traditional clothes and enjoy the festival with friends and family. Sharing meals and exchanging sweets helps them feel closer to their culture.

For NRI children, Diwali is a time to learn about Indian traditions. Parents share stories of Lord Rama and other legends behind Diwali, helping kids understand its importance. Community events often have activities like diya painting and rangoli making, which allow children to experience the festival in a fun way. This helps them feel proud of their heritage.

Even though celebrating Diwali abroad has challenges, NRIs find ways to adapt. Some restrictions on fireworks and time differences with India can make it difficult, but many connect with family through virtual celebrations. NRIs also enjoy sharing the holiday with non-Indian friends, teaching them about Diwali’s meaning. No matter where they are, NRIs keep the spirit of Diwali alive by celebrating together.
