Diwali is the most awaited festival of India.It is a major religious festival of the Hindus. But it is also celebrated by Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists. Each religion has its own origin but the central theme is the same. That is, victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. In celebrating this great festival, the things that we use have their own significance. First and foremost, the
a) Diyas(the earthen lamps) symbolise the inner light that protects us from spiritual darkness and instills in us, goodness kindness and purity. It also denotes dispelling anger, greed, other vices and negative energies.
b) Rangoli It represents the happiness, positivity and liveliness of household and is intended to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of goodness,wealth and good luck.
c) Lanterns Each house, rich or poor will hang them at the door post or on the top of their house because they the symbolise the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.
d) Sweets Though mentioned last, people start preparing them atleast a fortnight before Diwali. Because, they are the central part of the celebrations and have many symbolic meanings. The symbolise joy, gratitude, reverence, togetherness with family, friends and neighbours, love, tradition and affection, good omen and prosperity. The tradition of distributing the sweets is linked to the most popular legend associated with the Hindu epic Ramayana, which tells the story of Rama, Sita and Lakshman returning to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile.

In conclusion, the festival of Diwali reminds one and all the importance of righteousness(Dharma) and the strength of love and loyalty in overcoming all obstacles. But we can't celebrate it without Diyas, Rangoli, lanterns and sweets. Happy Diwali to my Indian friends and their families.
