Death of Indian workers triggers safety call in Bahrain
A spate of work site accidents in Bahrain leading to death of Indians and other expatriate workers, have triggered calls for construction firms to improve their safety record.
Three Indian construction workers were among four killed in workplace accidents last week.
Bahrain's Labour Ministry occupational health and safety acting head Hussain Al Shami told the local media on Saturday that companies must start changing their procedures to ensure a safer environment for workers.
"We need the companies to follow labour safety rules and regulations and laws concerning the health and safety of the workers," Mr. Al Shami told the Gulf Daily News.
"If the number of workers is 50, they should train the foremen or supervisors on safety procedures," he told the newspaper adding that the companies should report all accidents, especially serious cases, within 24 hours.
Reports suggest that the main reason for these accidents are lack of adherence to rules and ignorance of safety procedures. Bahraini officials recently announced that any company with 100 workers should have safety officers.
Meanwhile, Indian officials in the country say they are doing their bit to ensure safety of Indian construction workers in the country. - PTI
