The Kuwait Zoo is a very entertaining place which is often visited by families. Located in Omariya, off the fifth Ring road, this animal kingdom is a major attraction for both, the locals and the expatriate. There was extensive damage done to the premises and to the animals during the Iraqi invasion. However, most of the repairs the zoo needed have been completed and the zoo was again opened after some reconstruction was done and after bringing in some more new animals in February 1993. Though exactly not one of the best zoo, but nevertheless you will find it clean and spacious. It is quite a fun place for the kids especially if the weather is good and a perfect place for a family day out. Not only our 2year daughter enjoyed but it was a nice outing for us.
The sprawling park covers an area of around 1,80,000 sq meters and is divided into four main areas, including animal section, cultural center and life sciences division, services and maintenance sector, and veterinary clinic. Nonetheless, the animal zone is the most crowded part of the zoo. The enclosures are well maintained, the animals seem to be taken good care of and their cages are installed with A/C’s. A variety of species ranging from the dangerous carnivores, like cheetah, leopards, tigers, lions, European gray wolves, and striped hyenas to playful monkeys, chimpanzees, ring-tailed lemurs, and olive baboons are housed here. Tortoises, crested porcupines, gazelles, giraffes, elephants, Himalayan bears, ostriches, emus, impalas, crocodile, hippopotamus, zebra, wolves and deer are some other occupants of the zoo. The aviary comprises of exotic birds, such as black necked swans, flamingos, white eared bulbul, vultures, Indian mynah, steppe eagle, variety of parrots and white pelican to name a few. The reptile section is full of creepy crawlies, including boa constrictor, sand viper, diadem snake, ball python, and green iguana. Desert animals like the camel, Karla (the kangaroo cat), desert rattle snakes, desert cobra, fennec fox, Gila monsters, elf owl, desert tortoise, white-throated wood rat, ringtail and mule deer are also seen here. We were fortunate to see the ostrich lay two big eggs just in front of us. Today, the Kuwait Zoo houses 65 species of animals, 129 species of birds and five species of reptiles. So you see, there is a lot of variety and is both an educational and entertaining place.
There is also a toy train. You will relish the experience as it takes you on a tour of the zoo. Ticket price is cheap just 250fils. There are also 3restaurants within the premises, so you can pass time accordingly and need not think about your lunch. Food is allowed inside and we saw lot of Kuwaiti and Indian families enjoying their picnic at the park of the zoo.
With a ticket price of 500fils per person (for children it is free), this place is a perfect place where your child will learn and enjoy. Also you can plan out an outing. So, next time you are looking for some animal fun, ride the road to the zoo.
