Bhavans Kuwait is an institution that does not merely focus on academics but envisions the overall development of its students through holistic and value based education. As part of its earnest endeavour to strengthen the moral fibre, character and discipline of its students and to prepare them for the big wide world outside, Bhavans launched a new service scheme namely Bhavan’s Service Scheme (BSS) on April 11, Saturday. It was indeed the fruition of a long cherished dream of its founder Mr. N.K. Ramachandran Menon who has always striven to make a difference in the arena of private education in Kuwait with his futuristic educational policies.

BSS was officially launched in the presence of a large audience comprising parents, teachers, BSS volunteers, and well-wishers in the IES auditorium. The event was graced with the gracious presence of the chief guest, (Rtd.) Major General, Mr. Mohamed Mubarak.

The programme began on a solemn note with a secular prayer rendered by the members of the school choir. Mr.Murugaiyan, the Head of the Physical Education Department, IES as well as the Chief Commanding Officer of BSS briefed the gathering on the objectives of the BSS and its action plan drafted for the academic year 2015-2016. He pointed out the fact that the children across the Middle East are deprived of many an adventurous experience such as trekking, canoeing, and mountaineering owing to the geographical distinctiveness of the Middle East region. He mentioned that BSS is a non-profit service wing of IES dedicated to fostering discipline and leadership skills regardless of the geographical limitations of the region. He further added that BSS draws inspiration from National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS) of India.

Mr.Murugaiyan listed some of the activities that BSS has chalked out for the current academic year for its volunteers. An array of exciting activities such as Stay-in Camps, Service Camps, Campaigns for Social Causes, Swimming Sessions, March Past, Sessions on Value Education and Disaster Management, and Social Service Missions topped the list.

The flag unveiling ceremony captured the onlookers’ attention. The Chief Commanding Officer of BSS, Mr. Murugaiyan ceremoniously received the BSS flag from the chief guest Mr. Mohamed Mubarak and the chairman of Bhavans Middle East, Mr. N.K. Ramachandran Menon while the auditorium resonated with rounds of rolling applause.

The oath of allegiance for the BSS volunteers was administered by Mr. T.Premkumar, the principal of Bhavans Kuwait.

Mr. Mubarak, in his most inspiring speech, emphasised on the importance of discipline. He termed discipline as a bridge between goals and accomplishments. He reiterated the importance of physical and mental discipline during one’s formative years. He also narrated the hardships endured by him during the Iraqi aggression. He appreciated the efforts of the school management in providing the young children a very supportive platform to learn the value of discipline and the importance of selfless service. The epoch-making launching ceremony of the most exciting service scheme for the expatriate students in Kuwait came to an end when the Indian national anthem was played in the auditorium. Mr.Suresh.V.Balakrishnan, the vice principal, CBSE International, delivered the welcome address and Mrs. Lalitha Premkumar, the vice principal, KG and Primary Wings, proposed the vote of thanks. The emcees of the day were Miss. Sandra Santosh and Miss. Arundhathi Sharma of grade 7.
