Kuwaiti government and non-government entities, headed by the Voluntary Work Center chaired by Sheikha Amthal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, have joined the world in observing the Earth Hour, which falls on last Saturday of March every year.

The Kuwaiti institutions have switched off the lights Saturday at 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm to observer the global Earth Hour.

The annual Earth Hour aims to encourage people, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a mark for their commitment to the planet, Kuwait's Environment Public Authority (EPA) Sheikh Abdullah Ahmad Al-Humoud Al-Sabah.

He noted that the non-essential consumption of power has grave impacts on environment and it is a collective responsibility to help limit the global warming.

Earth Hour first started as a lights-off event in Australia in 2007 and turned into world-wide event, he pointed out.
