SCIMA – the Science & Mathematics week was officially inaugurated on 26th November, 2014, at Salmiya Indian Model School. The inaugural function began at 9am with the recitation of the Holy Quran, and was graced by Chief Guest Dr. (Mrs) Gargi Jain. Also present were the author of many books Dr. Rumane, who is also the Director, Construction Quality Management, Kuwait, Dr. Amir Ahmed, ex-President, Indian Doctors Forum, Kuwait and Principals from prominent schools in Kuwait.

The programme included an Introduction to SCIMA, group dance, Nukkad Naatak, group song, etc.. The guests were escorted to the various pavilions that included a Science Exhibition, Games Stall & Math Cafe. The Preliminary round for the ‘exQuizit’ was conducted to round up the 4 teams - out of 8 participating schools – who would proceed to the Final Round.
Science Exhibition :

SCIMA, aptly named, which was held at SIMS, spanning over a period of two days, drew not only crowds, but also unadulterated praise from all the dignitaries present.

The students of SIMS surprised everyone with their innovations based on several theories of physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics. The entire programme consisted of a quiz contest and an exhibition based on various theories of science. Comprising of 105 experiments the entire campus emitted the essence of science. Stick boat based on Newton’s Third Law, clinical thermometer, Ferris Wheel, laser security system, dynamo circuit, brush robots, battery made out of lemons, water turbine were just the tip of the iceberg. An array of surprises awaited us.
Electroscope, , Hydraulic Arm, based on the science of water pressure, Heron’s Fountain based on the fundamentals of pneumatics and hydraulics, , diesel powered dynamo, Electric fan, were some of the brilliantly executed experiments. Apart from these, there were some experiments, which need special mention. Those being, laser, lens less microscope, TRS Drawboat and Beambot.

Indeed, when diligence together with merit, acts as a catalyst, it is bound to result in a chain reaction of amazement and thereafter, approbation.

Math Cafe : An important appendage of SCIMA was the MATH CAFÉ organized by the students of class 5. The objective of organizing the Math Café was to help the students realize that Math is an integral part of our daily life. The students set up stalls and sold food items of different shapes and sizes- circular doughnuts, triangular samosas, rectangular cakes and cylindrical cake rolls and sandwiches.

It was a fun, social activity filled with high energy. The children had designed flyers to advertise their products and composed rhymes and jingles to attract customers. Dressed in aprons, chef-caps and gloves- students learnt that enjoyment of mathematics is not confined to a few ‘elite students’. The hands-on approach built confidence in them in using math skills while dealing with money. It built an effective partnership between the students and the project was a resounding success with all the guests and students of the school vying for the goodies that were being distributed with the products on sale.

Game Stall : Another important part of SCIMA was the GAME STALL that witnessed a flurry of activity. A great number of games that were math and science inclined drew children and adults alike, like a magnet, each vying for ‘Stars’ as reward for achievement.

The games conducted included Magic Star, Addition – Seven Eleven, Memory Games, Tangram, Tic Tac Toe, Bingo, etc.... The magic of Maths & Science came to the fore and realization dawned that these are not strictly serious but also fun subjects !!!!!

On 27th Nov, SIMS drew the curtain on SCIMA with the Final Round of ‘exQuizit’. The four teams that made it to the finals – Gulf Indian School, DPS, ICSK (senior), Don Bosco ( IEAS ) - were led to the stage by their respective flag bearers.

The Quiz was conducted by Mr. Pieter Louw, eminent educationist and Principal of British International School, Ajman.

DPS bagged top honours winning the ever-rolling trophy. Gulf Indian School came 2nd and ICSK ( senior) 3rd. All participants in the top 2 teams were awarded individual trophies while the team coming 3rd received certificates.
