Modern large buildings, complexes and skyscrapers have mushroomed in downtown Kuwait overshadowing ancient districts such as Sharq, Jibla and Mergab, thus signaling Kuwait's rapid modernization and construction development.

AlHamra Tower is one of the highest in the world and tops those built in Kuwait, with 77 floors reaching 413 meters into the skies. Second comes the 300-m-high Arraya Tower (60 stories), then Al-Mutahida Tower, the highest residential complex in Kuwait, 60 floors and 270 meters in height, followed by the 220-m Al-Tijaria Tower of 41 floors.

The towers and high complexes overshadow large swaths of the first and oldest sectors of Kuwait that had existed during the "fences times."
