Bid to smuggle in 6,000 liquor bottles foiled

The Drug Control General Department (DCGD), in cooperation with the Customs General Department, recently foiled an attempt to smuggle 6,000 bottles of liquor through Shuaiba Port. In a press statement, the Ministry of Interior explained this is part of continuous efforts to stop smuggling operations. Acting on a tip-off, the DCGD contacted the Customs General Department to obtain information on the suspected shipment which arrived on July 10. Through the concerted efforts of the two institutions, the shipment was put on hold for thorough inspection and this led to the discovery of the contraband.

A case was registered and those suspected of being behind the smuggling operation were referred to the concerned security department for the necessary legal action. According to Al-Watan Arabic daily, a security source said the consignment of 6,000 bottles (600 cartons) of imported liquor was to be cleared by a Kuwaiti citizen with criminal record when it reached Al- Shuaiba Port, and all procedures were completed under the close watch of securitymen until the delivery arrived at a farm in Wafra. However, the Kuwaiti citizen left for a neighboring country at once, when he sensed exposure.
