Monday, October 5, 2009

The preview screening of the first Malayalam short film “Punarjani”, completely produced in Kuwait, was held at AIS auditorium on 1st Oct, 2009. It was a proud movement for the expatriate Malayalam community. Directed by Shemej Kumar K.K, who is an engineer by profession, the film is produced by Friends Creations, Kuwait.

Shemej Kumar welcomed all the special guests and introduced the crew and cast to the audience. He also gave a brief of the movie.

Mr. Vijay Singh, First Secretary for Cultural affairs, Indian Embassy, Kuwait was the Chief Guest on the occasion. He lauded the effort and hoped that this project would be an inspiration for more such works to come out of the Indian community in Kuwait. The theme of the movie “Punarjani” - the love between a mother and her son and both of their love towards the nature, he remarked was very relevant in the present day world.

Riyaz – Editor of Ayanam web magazine felicitated the crew of “Punarjani”. Noted poet and writer Karunakaran reviewed the film and presented his views. In his opinion despite the various flaws in the film, the craftsmanship bore similarity to the works of great Malayalam film makers such as Aravindan and Adoor Gopalakrishnan. He felt that it was impressive to note that unknown faces were used to portray the roles, especially when the Malayalam mainstream cinema has fallen prey to the “Superstar” culture.

Earlier the function was inaugurated with the “lighting of the lamp” ritual. Along with the guests,
Shemej Kumar, Vinod V Nair (Camera man/Editor) and Rajesh Poonthuruthi (Lead actor) lit the lamp. A sizeable audience of over 700 people attended the function. The pin drop silence in the auditorium is broken only when the movie was over. The theme and craft of the movie was well appreciated by audience.
