Trees, Our Livelihood

Trees, Our Livelihood

Trees are our habitat. They provide us the air we breathe, medicinal plants, wood, fodder for cattle and many other things. They provide us the pure air that we need to breathe in and thus are called the Green Lungs. They maintain the balance between the amount of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the atmosphere and thereby help to prevent global warming. They prevent soil erosion and floods by binding the soil together and not letting go of it to be washed away when it rains heavily. In India, a festival called Vanmahotsav makes sure that each individual contributes a tree or some service to the society. Each child is given a sapling of a tree and is asked to plant it somewhere they feel it should be.

It should be lush green with all types of wildlife species and birds. The lovely flowers with sweet fragrance and wonderful smell attract the birds and insects. A sunflower garden looks like a wide yellowish carpet spread across miles and miles. The beautiful voice of the birds sing and chirp happily are pleasant things to behold in a forest. At least once in our lifetime, we must contribute something to Mother Nature. Here is a poem on the beauty of trees:

A Tree That May In Summer Wear A Nest Of Robins In Her Hair

A Tree That Looks At God All Day And Lifts Her Leafy Arms To Pray

I love trees, I always have. I love the natural world but trees always had a special something in my heart.
