Substantial Significance of Kuwait’s National and Liberation Day

Kuwait, our second homeland, celebrates its National and Liberation Day on February 25th and 26th each year. This day holds great significance for the people of Kuwait as it marks the end of a traumatic period in their history and the beginning of a new era of independence and freedom.

The National Day celebrates Kuwait's independence from British colonial rule in 1961, while the Liberation Day marks the end of the Gulf War in 1991, when Kuwait was liberated from Iraqi occupation.

The journey to independence was not an easy one for the people of Kuwait. It became a British protectorate in the early 20th century. It was not until February 25, 1961, that Kuwait finally gained its independence and became a sovereign nation. The National Day is a time for Kuwaitis to reflect on their history and appreciate the struggles and sacrifices that were made to achieve independence.

The Gulf War, which lasted from August 1990 to February 1991, was a dark chapter in Kuwait's history. Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait in August 1990, leading to a brutal seven-month occupation that resulted in widespread destruction and loss of life. The liberation of Kuwait on February 25, 1991 marked the end of this traumatic period and signaled a new beginning for the people of Kuwait.

On National and Liberation Day, the streets of Kuwait are adorned with flags and decorations in the colors of the Kuwaiti flag – green, white, black, and red. The day is filled with celebrations, parades, fireworks, and cultural events that bring the people of Kuwait together to honour their country's history and achievements.

There are also concerts, exhibitions, and other cultural events that promote Kuwaiti heritage and traditions. These events offer a glimpse into Kuwaiti culture, featuring traditional music, dance, and cuisine that showcase the country's rich history and vibrant culture.

As Kuwait continues to grow and prosper as a nation, National and Liberation Day serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of the Kuwaiti people. It is a day to celebrate the country's past, present, and future, and to reaffirm the national pride and unity that binds the people of Kuwait together.
