“Your body exists in the past and your mind exists in the future. In yoga, they come together in the present” - B.K.S.Iyengar
The word ‘Yoga’ literally means ‘union’ or ‘to merge’. Whatever we do is an expression of who we are. But yoga is not an expression, it is the definition of who you wish to be. The story is traced back to the ancient sacred text of Rig Veda. This Indian scented art evolved during the Indus Sarasvati civilization in Northern India over 5,000 years ago and is today analyzed and practiced internationally.
15,000 years ago, a Yogi appeared in the upper regions of the Himalayas. A large group of people gathered around him as his presence was phenomenal. They expected him to do or say something. But he did and said nothing, instead he simply sat. He meditated not for days or weeks, but for months. Everybody expected a miracle. To their surprise, nothing happened. He just sat without attending to the needs of his own human body system. He neither ate or drank. People could not even make out whether he was alive or dead. Interestingly, the only sign of life was, off and on, tears of ecstasy were dribbling down his cheeks. Only seven people hung on realizing his transcended physical nature. Today we celebrate these 7 people as ‘Saptha Rishis’. They were the first disciplines of Adiyogi. These seven people showed interest and were willing to do anything to learn its methodology and learnt preparatory steps for many years. One day when the solstice was shifting to June 21st , Adiyogi first gave his teaching turning to the south direction. On this day, the United Nations declared World Yoga Day.
