SIMS Vs Bhavans
posted by Knick Tart
Dear parents,

I live in salmiya and my kids are in bhavans in 6th and 8th grade. I am planning to shift them to SIMS. I need advise from parents who have done a similar shift and their frank opinion on both the schools.

Appreciate your replies.

My concern is school timings which would be reduced by more than 3 hrs a day. reason being as children are progressing to higher classes they need more time to prepare at home. The no home work concept does not work.

The teaching and support is pretty good at Bhavans but they leave house at 6:10 AM and are back at 3:50 PM which is very tiring. They need some rest and then cannot participate in any other activities apart from studies.

You can shift to Abbassiya, near Bhavans school...

I too live in Salmiya and recently shifted my kids from Bhavan's to SIMS, due to the timings. They used to come at 4pm and then go to tutions which was very tiring. The remedial classes on Thursday, are a waste of time.Though the facilities/infrastructure provided by Bhavan's are superior to any school in Kuwait, the standard of teachers is below par. Now my kids have time for other activities and tutions, after joining SIMS

Its bit surprising to me that faculties in Bhavans are not upto the standard. Teachers there are highly paid and are with better qualification for teaching profession compared with any other Indian schools here.

@knick,You said-The teaching and support is pretty good at Bhavans. It would be a pity to see kids going to other school and then end up going to tuitions also. These days parents take pride in sending the kids to tuitions, especially for lower classes - which was the other way few years back.

Tuition fees in Kuwait are some kind of tips given to teachers like in Hotels waiter gets. Those rich & hands free customers give tips in hotels, others don't do d same. Same thing happens here to. Teachers are d least paid servants of society in Kuwait. There is no harm in giving or receiving such tips.

BHAVANS turned out to be a business firm rathen than an educational institute. Review the CBSE 10th and 12th result for the last few years, BHAVANS stand 3rd or 4th after DPS and few other schools.

When it comes to extra-curricular DPS is the leader & I believe SIMS is going to be DPS of Salmiya. Because they got a great principal, Mr.SANJAY YADAV, a retired ISRO Scientist. Moreover he used to be the vice-principal of DPS Kuwait.

Whether in this or that school, you need to send your kids to tuition once they are in 10, 11 and 12th. The only diff between one school and other is about fees. The fee in some schools are three times of others, still one need to send the kids to tuition. Assume that the companies stop reimbursement of ed.fee, you will see the plight of students from those schools to other normal schools. I personally knows about the teachers of highly ranked school telling students to come for tuition to my home. I will clear your doubts there, not at school.
Sending students to school only to get registration to CBSE.

Our kids are schooling in Bhavans from last seven years. The teachers are very co-operative. Staff and Principal is approachable even over the phone. Timings is the only drawback there. Our kids reach home by 3.45pm which limits them to any other activities. Otherwise we are content with the teachers and the quality of education. The fee increase of 5% effective this year has been the first increase since the school started seven years ago. If you are looking at better school timings, this is not a favorable school.

Thanks for the reply's. I am more interested in SIMS feedback rather than Bhavans as Bhavans has a good infrastructure and support. The rest is up to us parents to guide our children to make the best of it.
As far as the tuition is concerned I disagree that it is mandatory to send children for tuition's. I will list down a few website that cover the entire CBSE syllabus for grades V and above. All you need is to subscribe (which is cheap around 5000 for 1 year of maths & science) and spend some time with your kids to guide through the content. This will help for
1. Give kids best study material by leading teachers.
2. Give them more time with parents.
3. Repeat any topic as many times as needed.
Websites:-
www.learnnext.com
www.extramarks.com
www.extraminds.com
www.meritnation.com
and there are many more just do a google search.
I request again the parents whose kids are in SIMS to give their honest feedback.

Just to clarify the 5000 is Indian rupees. Some are free and even cheaper.
