As Indians, we get nostalgic at merely the sight of Tiranga-The Indian Flag. However, it is interesting to know that the present day flag that we see wasn’t like this from day one. It underwent many changes. The first flag was composed of three horizontal strips of red, yellow and green. The second flag was exhibited in Berlin and was quite similar to the first flag except few changes. The third flag in 1917 was used during home rule movement and was very different from the earlier ones with red and green alternative strips. In 1921, it went major change and had 3 strips representing 3 communities of India with Charkha in the middle. In 1931, a major milestone was achieved with a resolution to adopt the tricolour as our National flag was passed with Charkha in the centre. On 22nd July 1947, the tricolour was adopted as the Free India National Flag, with the spinning wheel replaced by Emperor Ashoka’s emblem.
