Indian man Narayanan Krishnan among the top 10 CNN Heroes

CNN has nominated Indian Narayanan Krishnan in the top 10 CNN Heroes of 2010.

A panel comprised of luminaries recognized for their own dedication to public service selected this year's top 10 CNN Heroes, according to CNN.com. The names were chosen from more than 10,000 nominations submitted by viewers in 100 countries.

Narayanan Krishnan brings hot meals and dignity to India's homeless and destitute - 365 days a year - through his nonprofit Akshaya Trust. Since 2002, he has served more than 1.2 million meals.

Narayanan Krishnan, a gifted young chef from Madurai, India, was working for an exclusive hotel group preparing haute cuisine for the ultra-rich. But when he went home to visit his family, something he saw shocked him to his core.

“I saw a very old man eating his own human waste for food,” he told CNN.

Krishnan knew he couldn’t go back to the gourmet restaurants he’d been working in when his own countrymen were starving to death. So he decided to stay in India and begin fixing meals for that man, and for the countless others who could not care for themselves.

The following year, he founded the nonprofit group Akshaya Trust. The organization is named for the “Akshaya bowl” from Hindu mythology, a bottomless bowl that can feed the hungry forever—just as Krishnan hopes his group will do. Each morning, Krishnan and his team rise at 4 AM, and seek out the homeless throughout a 123-mile radius, armed with packets of hot vegetarian meals that Krishnan has prepared by hand. He brings the meals to a crowd of about 400 regulars, and gives them free haircuts and beard trims when they need it. In the years since starting the nonprofit, he’s served over 1.2 million meals. His recipients are nearly all mentally ill, and do not have the capacity to thank him.

All Top 10 CNN Heroes will each receive US$25,000 and will be honored at CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute, hosted by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper that will air on Friday November 26th at 5.30am Indian Standard time from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and replay at 2.30pm Indian Standard time. At the November gala, CNN will reveal the CNN Hero of the Year, who will receive an additional $100,000. Viewers can go to www.CNNHeroes.com to participate in the poll. Online voting will conclude at 3.30pm Indian Standard time on Thursday, November 18th.

People like Mr. Krishnan could make a religious person out of this old atheist. There must be divinity in his heart. I have drawn a picture of him on my blog if you would like to see it: mongrel4u.wordpress.com

I hope he will be able to continue his wonderful work for many years and that others will emulate him.

Great service to humanity.
Very few of us think but Hari does it.
Living Bharathi with a great spirit and action.
I wonder every time how he does this even we don't feel to care our own aged people at home.
A boost for young Indians and a way for global youngsters.

Hi,

Let us not comment and criticise what KN is doing. We are seeing so many poor people on our way to office. We never thought anything for social cause.Just going ahead with our own priorities. He is doing something good to humanity.Let us respect others who are also doing something good. Hats off to them. let us not compare everyone. Now we have come to know about Krishnan Narayanan now. Whether he does for publicity or not, he is performing a great work. He did not come to us and asking any help. How many of us will leave our job and do something like this?Do we have the courage? He is doing on his own.Let us not do any postmortem about what KN is doing. Let us cast our vote.Atleast let us do this job from our side.

Mr NK has not asked for any publicity. He was chosen by CNN .He was in top 10 . Nobody can nominate himself. There are lot of screening carried out. You are right there are many more. But his winning award from CNN will help a cause. So one should talk negative at this great moment. All should vote for NK so that his mission gets completed.Very few are there who can thing what others need forgetting about themselves. He has resigned his job in Taj Hotel to do this . Hats off to him. So do not talk the way you are doing

Reply to Sadasivan: This person is not looking for publicity! He is merely stating a fact which instigated him to perform this noble act. If it wasnt this person who was consuming his own waste then probably he wouldnt have taken this noble cause. And mind you he is not publicising himself for fame. Look at it positively. If he shows what he is doing there will be many more who will be behind him and support him, thereby increasing hands tremendously for the benefit of the needy! Kudos to this young man and I hope many more (specially the rich who can give out in millions) will join him. And India does not need CWG for its face-lifting; India needs the likes of Narayan Krishnan to UP-LIFT the poor and needy. I wish the HAVES take up the cause and up-lift the HAVE-NOTS. I know its easy said then done - but it must start some where, and its the right time. JAI HIND.

i am really proved to have such a person in my own birth place. i know so many of us have the same feelings to help orphan, mentally challenged and physically challenged. but our situation do not allow us to do. so our dreams are dreams only. but Mr. N.K has done it and he is a example for all of us. i feel, respecting and helping a human is equal to pray a god for 10000 times. we fail to help human but we never fail to pray god for our own need. think guys. if i hurt any one i am really beg your pardon.

Replay to Raj,

I Aknwldge Your Comments with Thanks. The First Sentance of His Verson is That was very much of Feelings. But I feel CNN like him mainly because of his comments "I saw a very old man eating his own human waste for food,”. This will be projected to de-grade India's growth, like BBC did in CWG. Those who are doing Good Things/Helping Peuples are Without Publicity.

Reply to Sadasivan: If someone else is doing similar deed somewhere does not make this person a less Hero and worthless in his efforts. You must acknowledge his great deed. Do you perform such deeds on a regular basis? Please look deep down yourself before pointing others. A great deed is a great deed anywhere anytime. This person is doing something commendable, while the rich only warm their cozy chairs and looking for their interests only. I suggest every Indian must contribute to this person in his efforts to reach and help the down trodden and the destitutes, so that his organization reaches beyond 123 mile radius. May Allah help him and Bless him and hope he continues...
