Center for India Studies organized Public Discussion Meeting on ‘Kerala in the aftermath of flood - Sufferings and Survival’

Kuwait: In the aftermath of the devastating floods in Kerala, Center for India Studies organized a public discussion meeting towards achieving the aim of rebuilding Kerala. The first of the series of general discussions was held on Friday, September 21st at Foke Auditorium Abbasiya on the subject ‘Kerala in the aftermath of flood - Sufferings and Survival’.

Presenting a new experience, eminent personalities associated with different cultural and social forums came together on a single platform for a common cause in reconstructing Kerala. Mr. Anil Bhaskar presided over the session and CIS Kuwait General Secretary Mr. Sreejith moderated the proceedings.

OICC Vice President Mr. Hameed Keloth, Help Kerala Secretary and journalist Mr. Sunny Mannarakkad, Santhwanam Kuwait President Mr. Jyothidas Thodupuzha, BPP Organizing Secretary Mr. VP Vijayaraghavan, Teacher and social worker Ms. Babitha Bright, Sevadarshan General Secretary Mr. Praveen Vasudevan, Indian Islamic Center Speaker Mr. Abdul Rahman Thangal and Social Activist & Writer Mr. Vibheesh Thikkodi participated in the meeting.

Participants pointed out that climate change, increased intrusions in ecological sensitive zones, imbalance caused by density of population, urbanization, inefficiency in dam management, delay in policy decisions, and lack of bureaucratic coordination as the main reasons for the devastating floods.

The conference put forward the need for adapting a cultural based life style with emphasis on nature conservation in the aftermath of the lessons learnt from the Kerala floods. Entire participants stressed on the requirement of having an accurate and comprehensive measurement of losses due to flood and also pointed out the necessity of Government involving all political, religious and NGOs towards reconstruction of Kerala.

In this event attended by different expatriate communities in Kuwait, Ms. Saritha Sunil welcomed the gathering and Suresh Kumar proposed Vote of Thanks.
