Centre to double BPO seats in NE: Minister

Union Minister for Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday said the seat capacity for the BPO industry in North-East will be raised from 5,000 to 10,000, adding the Centre is also planning to open a Regional Data Centre in Guwahati.

"India's BPO centers are all in big cities, but now we have transformed small towns into BPO hubs. There are BPO centers in Kohima, Guwahati and Dibrugarh now which have opened multiple job opportunities for the youth," he said, urging the Chief Ministers to give the BPO sector a boost in their respective states.

The Union Minister said this while releasing the Digital North East India Vision 2022 at a function organized in Assam capital and appealed to the northeastern states to focus so that the Digital India programme could be successful in these states.

The Digital India is a flagship programme approved by Government of India with a vision to transform the country into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.

The Union Minister said that under the programme efforts have been made to bring in all the people of the region under digital influence. He also said that Digital India has lent transparency to the entire system.

"There will be e-classroom facilities in the medical colleges of Shillong, Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Agartala and Imphal. We are making India a digital superpower," he said.

Besides opening a Regional Data Centre in Guwahati, 50,000 Assam government employees will be encompassed under digital technology, he said.

"Digital India is a mass revolution. The Prime Minister ensured that Delhi come closer to NE in terms of bringing all opportunities to this region," he said, adding the government has been able to save Rs. 90,000 crore during these years by eliminating middlemen.
