Kharafi labor issues: Minister VK Singh to visit Kuwait next week

In its continuous effort to solve the issue of thousands of Indian workers in Kharafi National Company, the minister of external affairs Gen Mr VK Singh will be visiting Kuwait next week to discuss the issue again with Kuwaiti authorities. Minister VK Singh along with the newly appointed Indian Ambassador to Kuwait Sri Jeev Sagar will be meeting the Kuwaiti authorities on Jan 11th to discuss and find a lasting solution for the issues of distressed Indian workers at the Kharafi Company.

Indian embassy earlier on several occasion, raised the issue of distressed Indian workers at Kharafi Company with the Kuwaiti authorities. During his visit to Kuwait in September, Indian Minister Sri M J Akbar had raised this issue with the highest Kuwaiti authorities. During his meeting with Minister of Social Affairs and Labour Hind Al-Sabeeh in September, Kuwait Minister assured that an early resolution will be taken within two weeks’ time. She had requested Indian Embassy to submit the list of Indian workers to take appropriate action. However, even after Indian embassy submitted the list of around 3000 plus Indian workers, there is no concrete action taken yet neither from the company nor from the Kuwaiti authorities.

More than 3000 Indians working for National Kharafi group are not getting their salary for more than 8 to 10 months. Many of them who resigned from The Company are waiting for their pending salary and settlement to leave Kuwait. Meanwhile, many of their residency are expired. They are also unable to leave the country as they already have huge amount as fine for their expired residency.

Every month the company had repeatedly assured the workers they would get their salaries, only to renege on the promises at the end of the month. Without any financial resources, the employees continue to live under desolate conditions in their camp in Shuaiba Industrial Area, sometimes for weeks without water, poor sanitation, intermittent electricity, and with no access to proper medical care.

Embassy had on several occasion requested the authorities to wave of the residency fine and allow the labors to leave the country without paying the fine. Embassy also requested the authorities to allow them to transfer their residency to other companies where they can work. However no action has been taken from the authorities till date on this regard.

Gen VK Singh is expected to raise the issue again with the Kuwaiti side to find an immediate action on this pressing issue. Minister’s visit exclusively to solve this issue give a little solace to the large number of distressed Indians at the company camp.

There are some comments about 'preparation of New List ' which is absolutely not required. Most of the companies have ERP systems with complete detail of all employees working / resigned / released / their pending amount etc. In reality a perfect list is impractical to compile as most of the employees are scattered at various locations. May be for buying time or delaying the whole process some one can demand such lists; otherwise all data should be readily available with these companies.

Full sympathy for suffering workers and their families.
Present government in India is weakest ever.
These ministers do came and have lavish parties with VVIP's and will do lip service.
They could not solve this burning issue for last one year so what's the use of making unnecessary visits.

It is a positive initiative from Govt. of India, but this will not give solace to the affected employees of Kharafi unless it is completely solved this time.

If the Ministers cannot resolve this issue at their level, then they should escalate the issue to the Heads of States for an immediate solution. India should stop pleading and instead demand justice to the employees from Kuwait.

Generally employees resign due to personal issues or when they are fed up with a company. In either situation, resigned expat employee should be paid and send back after the notice period instead of ill-treating here. May be some companies are doing so with some intention; but it is very cheap manner to harass their own employees after serving a company sincerely for many years. By doing so, what message is passed to remaining employees or future employees ? Also, majority don't have any saving for their retired life other than the 'service benefits' which is negligible for a big company.

Apart from arranging the minister's visit and meetings, I don't think that our embassy is so serious in this issue, as it is evident from the two lists uploaded in their website which is incomplete/ improper and having many duplication. I beg them to revise/ update their list with proper identity and contact numbers before going for next round meeting, as many people have left the company/ country leaving their dues and many more are stranded or continue to work for keeping the residency active and looking for an opportunity to receive the pending salaries and indemnity which is essential for their survival back home

Embassy of India has it own lawyers what they waiting for why not sue the company,Are they scared Kharafi company is too big to be taken to court. If this is the fear than forget it about our ninisters visiting kuwait for what, just on assurances. Indian govt has to be strong not only words but also in action.

Why can't india directly provide full financial support for the kharafi workers. It is 0.40 million kd only for the total back log clearance.
Why do we need to beg with kharafi or Kuwaiti authority for our own earned money.

Though lot of efforts were put by Indian Embassy & our EAM, the issue remains the same for the past one year! While the resigned workers have camp & food, Engineers & higher positions are not eligible; they are managing stay & food on their own expense. Here the waiting period is unpaid. In other GCC countries it should be paid; hence companies settle the 'service benefits' of employees quickly. Employees are not demanding any favor; just pay their deserving money & send them back.

Omg, still not yet resolved? That issues?
So what's is the meaning of previous visit? Indian authority should speak seriously.not simply posted news as i was Kuwait and met Kuwait authority.like that!
Sushma and other persons reacted only vote based issues.but this is life based issues.
