Mental illness test for domestic workers

Monday, March 13, 2017

The Ministry of Interior has written to the Ministry of Health to examine domestic workers wishing to work in Kuwait to be tested for mental illnesses at the approved medical centers in their countries before they are allowed to work in Kuwait.

According to local daily Al-Anba newspaper report, Interior Ministry said this step is taken to ensure domestic workers do not suffer from psychological or mental illnesses before they are given work permits due to the sensitivity and gravity of the situation and the nature of the work.

The Interior Ministry said this is necessitated following a change in behavior of domestic workers since a huge number of them suffer from psychological problems.

yes its a right move, let them check that the worker is normal at the time of coming to Kuwait, and later after several years when they start having the psychological problems let the sponsor be responsible for it and pay the charges to treat the worker.

I know, one Indian nurse is brought to look after one mentally retarded daughter, but when she took over the work, there are three left in the upper floor, with the nurse. She has to feed and bath all the three, who are to be lifted & shifted always, as they are paralised, one of them weighing more than 100 kg. & other is blind. Nurse is given only Kuwaiti rationed rice and daal as food regularly for years. She is always in the middle of cry, and screaming of these three. When she is asking for release, next month promise goes on.......for last 3 1/2 years. Now she is half mad........ Who is making them mad ????.........

The sponsors also should be checked to assess their mental health.

On the other hand, even after 60 years of independence if a person has to leave the country for menial jobs, then it is utter failure of all the governments. Every election abundance of development promises, which is immediately forgotten after the vote count.

Hi freinds,
this situation is for every one who live far from their own countries not only in Gulf/but in other countries .In fact regarding this domestic workers , i agree if this country want this test to be done , they can as its their own country and they can dictate their terms, but out great country leaded by Great PM's Modi should provide jobs to ladies/labour so that india should not allow citizen to work as domestic workers.this is a solution.

Thanks,

it is not the domestic maids but the sponsers who should be tested for mental illness. because the way they treat the maids in this country is pathetic,i mean seriously check the sponsers first. the maids are in perfect sound mind when they arrive in this country.

Domestic workers and a certain percentage of other employees, who are coming to Kuwait are completely in stable and perfect mental state. Their Psychological issues start once they reach here.

A sane human being alien to local culture, thrusted into work immediately upon arrival, nervous, homesick and lonely not given enough time, compassion and orientation to settle into new world.
Then they wonder if these people are mentally sick.

Over work, mistreatment and underpaid will lead any normal person to go insane. The law should be fair to all; sponsors also must undergo same tests.
