Lawmakers looking for special debate on expat numbers

Tuesday, January 17, 2017

Parliamentarians are collecting signatures to demand holding a special debate in the Assembly to discuss the dangers of the rising numbers of expatriates in the country, local media reported. According to local newspaper, some of teh MPs expects the debate to be held in February to discuss the implications of the growth in expatriate numbers on the demographic structure.

MP Abdulkarim Al-Kandari said the Assembly wants to know the position of the government regarding this issue and its planned measures to deal with the imbalance in the demographic structure, adding that Kuwaitis should not remain a minority in their own country.

According to the latest official statistics, there are around 3.1 million expatriates in Kuwait from a total population of 4.4 million, or 70 percent of the population. Kuwaitis number 1.33 million or 30 percent of the population.

Most of these expats are low-paid manual workers earning their salaries after hard work and sweating. There are 650 thousand house-maids (mostly working in Kuwaiti houses), 500 thousand cleaner and another 500 thousand working for companies with minimum salary.
If all these people are removed then Kuwait will come to complete standstill and life will be really miserable for Kuwait’s first and even expats will suffer tremendously.
It is easy for law-makers/experts talking all these big but Govt. of Kuwait understands the reality very well and will never allow it to happen (to remove expats.). They can only replace few thousand employees in Govt. /private sectors but that will not make any big difference in the statistics.
