NRIs concern over the deadline to replace old 500 and 1000 currency notes

IIK Staff Reporter Wednesday, November 9, 2016

As NRI’s in Kuwait welcoming the bold decision by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday about denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, the NRIs in Kuwait share their concerns and uncertainty about the options available for NRIs.

In a surprise move, the prime minister announced that the 500 and 1000 rupee notes are invalid from 9th November 2016 to tackle the menace of black money in the country, which has sapped the economy.

Indian expatriates in Kuwait are not keeping big amounts of Indian rupees since India strictly asked its expatriates not to carry Indian currency notes from abroad to India. Still, most of the Indians may be keeping at least Rs 1,000 with them when they come back from home for any emergency spending at airport during their travel. With this sudden withdrawal of 500 and 1000 rupee notes, they are concerned about that few thousands of rupees they carry along after their last vacation.

According to the new scheme of exchanging the exciting notes, anyone can exchange the existing 500 and 1000 rupee bank notes at branches of commercial banks, Regional Rural Banks, Urban Cooperative banks, State Cooperative Banks and RBI till 30th December 2016. An NRI can deposit the currency to their NRO bank account as per the government guidelines. For those who are unable to exchange their Specified Bank Notes on or before December 30, 2016, an opportunity will be given to them to do so at specified offices of the RBI, along with necessary documentation as may be specified by the Reserve Bank of India till March 2017.

Generally the NRIs in Kuwait plan their next vacation in 2017 June – July, that is during the school vacation. But the fact that the deadline given to replace the old currency notes will be over by this time really concerns the NRI community in Kuwait. "We cannot travel to India only to exchange few thousands of rupees we are carrying with us. We are hoping that the government of India will extend the dead line of replacing the old currencies at least till the end of 2017", an NRI businessman told IndiansinKuwaitc.om

Large number of people are approaching the Indian Embassy in Kuwait to check how they can replace the currencies they have with them. "As per the rule, the Embassy cannot accept Indian rupee at the embassy", the officials from Indian Embassy informed IndiansinKuwait.com. Embassy is getting large number of calls from the community as the news of denomination of 500 and 1000 rupees broke out.

Indians are also looking at the options to replace old currency with the money exchange in Kuwait. Large number of Indians throng to the money exchanges to change and returned back with empty handed while trying to change the currencies to Kuwaiti Dinar. "As per the government of India rule, the 500 and 1000 denominations are no more a legal tenders and thus we are unable to accept these currencies until we get further notification from the authorities", said officials of one of the leading money exchange in Kuwait to IndiansinKuwaiat.com

The only hope for the expatriate community is that the government will extend the deadline of replacing the currency till the end of next year.

An humble request to Indian Embassy in Kuwait - Please take the matter with PMO for allowing Indians residing in GCC to exchange old 500/- & 1000/- currency notes at Indian airports on arrival.
We don't keep large amounts with us but I am sure each family will have at least INR. 3000/- to meet local expenses after landing.

A counter should be opened at all airports of arrival for NRI's to exchange their old 500/1000 notes.
This will be beneficial and also the dates for exchange should be for atleast till the end of 2017 for people who have travelled out of India before this rule came into force to avoid black marketers to use NRI's to convert their money

With 20 Millions NRIs abroad , Hope Indian Govt can provide a genuine solution, with a Role model Policy, winning NRIs hearts, without asking a favor of anyone travelling to India, to carry the notes, if any left with NRIs reasonably, promoting the objects of current demonetization.

Nil Governance on Finances getting out of country is the main reason for having got to the present situation. What has gone will never come back. What is going to get out of the country will continue to get out the same way as it is being done for ages. No Corporates' puppet rulers can change this. India by history is having a curse that gets plundered either by outsider or by the insiders. ATMs are not working as at present. Bankers verbally say it will take 4 weeks to get streamlined. IOUs are working in Kiranas as of now bare minimum.

Indian Government should have authorized Indian Embassy to establish a counter to collect old Indian currency and send them to India. This will not take a long time for embassy in Kuwait but it will help so many poor people also who are working in kuwait. If Indian Government wants to introduce radical changes, most welcome but do make provisions too. a single 500 rs note is still a hard earned money. Humble request to our ambassador in Kuwait to help in this matter and talk to Indian government for help of Indians in Kuwait.

Firstly in the short term there will be many hurdles for most of the citizens and expatriates in the different ages and income sources of individuals as adults and old age people in the family and society to complete the daily needs of life with compulsory opening of new bank accounts and use of new automated teller machine cards with the secret password who do not use banks for any financial transactions.

Secondly, in the long term all the financial transactions for collection of taxes by state governments, cess by central governments and international monitoring of every human life financial earnings, saving and expenditure for every need to live will be in the control of the gaint software companies and international policies of a particular ruler or government.

Hope every individual life will have the right to live his life with the earning as a family in the nations, without any unnecessary pressure of paying for collections in various forms, since all ages from the local residence associations, religious social groups, political ruling governments and not to forget the anti-social elements which are also part of the system.

If Indian Embassy willling to change the INR they can do, afterall it is representing Indian Government rules for Indians . So for every Indian , embassy is the last hope and it is not cooperating too . They must take the authority from Indian Government on behalf of expatriates who living in abroad. It's not a note of 10 or 20 whose value is less and which can't impact us of being changed , it's a higher denomination.
