Yoga no religious activity, a global mass movement: Modi

Yoga is no religious activity and people must embrace it for better mental and physical health, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said here on Tuesday to mark the International Day of Yoga.

Addressing some 30,000 yoga enthusiasts at the Capitol Complex, Modi also said that the UN-declared International Day of Yoga had become the biggest global mass movement.

"Yoga is not about the other life. Therefore, it is not a religious practice. It is the science of this world, it is about what we will get in this life," Modi said, speaking in Hindi.

He said yoga was for both believers and non-believers, and there was no need to create any controversy over it.

“Yoga is not a religious activity. Many people do not understand yoga completely. It is not what you will get from yoga but what is important is what you will give to yoga and what all (ailments) will it rid you of.

"It helps is getting mukti (salvation) from health issues,” Modi said, in an attempt to de-link the belief among some that yoga was a part of Hinduism.

“Among all days marked by the UN, no day has equalled the mass movement the International Yoga Day has become. It has become the biggest mass movement worldwide,” said Modi, who was instrumental in getting the UN to declare June 21 as the International Yoga Day.

"Make yoga a part of your life," he said. "Just as the mobile phone is now a part of your life, make yoga too a part of your life."

Yoga, he said, helped to control the mind and maintain a healthy body. It helped people to lead a disciplined life.

Modi said yoga was a guarantee for wellness, not just fitness.

"Yoga binds body, mind, intelligence and soul. It provides a balance to mind and body. Yoga gives health insurance at zero budget... Anyone can do it anywhere...

“We are busy in our lives. We are cut off from ourselves. Yoga links us to ourselves.”

He said yoga had become a “big profession worldwide”.

Modi said people in every corner of the country and indeed in other countries too were taking part in the International Yoga Day.

Expressing concern at the rising number of diabetics in India, he urged people to focus on the disease so that it could be tackled in a better way by the next International Yoga Day.

Modi announced two annual awards to be given from next year: for doing exceptional work for promotion of yoga at the international and national levels.

The prime minister later got down from the stage from where he addressed the gathering and shook hands with specially-abled yoga enthusiasts.

Donning T-shirts and track-pants, the yoga enthusiasts, shortlisted to perform yoga, had begun lining up around the spruced up complex around 4 a.m. on Tuesday.

Over 96,000 people had registered themselves to take part in the Chandigarh event. Of this, over 30,000 were picked, including 10,000 each from Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana.

Yoga day was also held at 100 other locations across Chandigarh.

Also on Tuesday, hundreds of thousands across the country began the day with yoga exercises.

Yoga guru Ramdev held his record-breaking yoga event in Faridabad town in Haryana, adjoining the national capital, earlier on Tuesday.

Organisers said over 100,000 people performed yoga with Ramdev, setting a world record.

The main event of the first International Yoga Day celebration was held on Rajpath in the heart of New Delhi last year.

@observer.. ignorance is a blessing for some..

Fyi.. Yoga is officially practised by US army and major universities as well as by many western countries due to its capability as a stress reliever and to bring in peace to mind..
And fyi.. i havent heard any Yogi exploding himself or anyone fighting or even quarrelling with anyone in the name of yoga.. u know y.? Bcoz yoga makes u peaceful..
Yoga is meant for peace and well being and NO ONE is forcing anyone to take up yoga...
also in yoga classes if u hav an issue, you may even use Amen or ameen instead of Aum.. and fyi there r many arab yoga teachers of various religions taking classes in kuwait.. they dont see religion in this..
Wen someone gives or offers u an apple, u can eat the good side of the apple and and can leave the seeds and the core aside.. similarly instead of taking the religious side of yoga, you may look into the positive and peaceful side of yoga as this part of the world needs some inner peace..

All Comments agreed. If yoga is just kind of exercise, let it do who are interested in it, let them do it. Why need to forcefully do it? If it is just exercises, there are similar exercises for fitness without names like yoga-based names.

And spreading the culture all over the world, doesn't generate useful output, what is the benefit of it ?

You do breathing exercises, pilates, strecthing etc, why do it to be forcefully performed yoga based?

I am person gone through yoga and asanans and little deeper level like chakra breathing and even kundalini. I have stopped all of these , I do breating, stretching etc. In schools, all of us are aware of a dedecated session for sports. Let the schoold students engage in that for the physical activity whatever they like. Why it precicely YOGA?

Well said Azad. To rest, who criticize, Most Indians an be termed as Hindus irrespective of their faith, whether Christian or Muslim. Christians in India have incorporated Hindu rites into their rituals, practices, marriages. By living amongst Hindus in India, we adapt a lot to their festivals. Onam is a Hindu festival, so does that mean non Hindus don't observe it. So I personally don't agree that to any criticisms about practicing Yoga. The term Suryanamaskar means sun worship but for a non Hindu, it's the posure of that Asana that needs to be understood.

well Mr. Thomas thankachan.. there are some things that U must know about a HINDUism...

The term and concept of Hinduism was coined only in recent times. Otherwise, there was really no such thing. The word “Hindu” essentially comes from the word Sindhu. Anyone who is born in the land of Sindhu is a Hindu. It is a cultural and geographic identity. It is like saying “I am an Indian” but it is a more ancient identity than being an Indian. “Indian” is only about seventy years old, but this is an identity that we have always lived with.

Being a Hindu does not mean having a particular belief system. Basically, the whole culture was oriented towards realizing one’s full potential. Whatever you did in this culture was Hindu. There is no particular god or ideology that you can call as the Hindu way of life. You can be a Hindu irrespective of whether you worship a man-god or a woman-god, whether you worship a cow or a tree. If you don’t worship anything you can still be a Hindu.

It is only recently and due to external influences that this geographical and cultural identity has attempted to transform itself into a religious identity called Hinduism. Hindu was never an “ism”, and the attempt to organize it as a religion is still not successful because the Hindu way of life which is referred to as Sanatana Dharma or universal law is all-inclusive in nature and does not exclude anything. The Hindu way of life is not an organized belief system but a science of salvation.
its the politicians and wicked religious leaders who divide us so that they can rule us separately...
So basically its always good to know OUR roots and then if u r still not convinced you may hate it..

I can be a Hindu despite of whichever religion I follow.. I can follow Allah (PBUH) or Jesus Christ or Buddha or Guru Nanak or anyone and still be a Hindu..!! Vande Mataram !!

Yoga is purely a religious activity. If the PM of India (Modi) says its not a religious activity then why he is telling everyone should mandatory practice Yoga in schools & colleges. In Yoga there is the "Suryanamaskar" means worshipping the sun god which is a practiced by the Hindus. If someone says Yoga is a non-religious activity it will never turnout to be a non-religious activity.PM of India should not deceive Indians, he should not create a propoganda of yoga and inject Hinduism in the minds of Christians & Muslims. Every humanbeing has the freedom to worship and follow his own religion.

I firmly believe the PM is confused between stretching & breathing exercises compared with Yoga. Of course stretching and breathing exercises are not religious, neither can it be called Yoga. But Yoga, if one checks out its evolution, can be found only in the Hindu epics & mythologies and are closely related with different namaskaras or worship of Hindu deities. One cannot take Hinduism out of Yoga, though a couple of non-religious breathing and stretching exercises can be included in Yoga.
I believe it is a well orchestrated marketing for the self proclaimed Yoga Guru Ramdev.
