Petrol prices to be probably hiked by May

Sunday, April 10, 2016

Petrol prices are most likely to be increased before the end of May as part of a series of steps and measures to be made to avoid reducing Kuwait’s sovereign rating, Kuwait Times daily reported citing Al-Rai Arabic news paper. Increasing gasoline prices is a practical solution so that the government could avoid downgrading, especially since hiking petrol prices do not need a special law like electricity prices, the daily added.

Increasing petrol prices simultaneously with those of electricity would confirm that Kuwait had already started actual economic reforms through reducing the cost of subsidies, especially since fuel subsidies alone have been costing the state budget around KD 1 million a year (71 percent of total subsidies), report added.

Increasing prices of basic utlities such as fuel, power and water would send the economy into inflation spiral. Subsidized utlities is a major attraction for labor to survive and spend in Kuwait. Eventually increased cost of living will be felt by Citizens sooner or later. Even if Govt subsidized citizens at the expense of expats, they would not be able to control inflation affecting Citizen's lifestyle.

if only there was no mismanagement and diversified economy this day would not have come. depending entirely on oil and not promoting alternate revenue channels like tourism with flexibe visa's, respect for expats and making them secure so they will invest in the local economy. overall it's a sad scenario. Allah bless all

"costing the state budget around KD 1 million a year (71 percent of total subsidies), report added."---->> Wrong figure, 1 Million per year 71% of total
