The True Indian Spirit

The True Indian Spirit

Post Independence some personalities made their mark on minds of people. People wondered how such people could be so humble in spite of being in high positions.

Lal Bahdur Shastri the second Prime Minister of India is one striking example. He had held high positions in Central Government. He has geld such responsible positions like Minister of Railways, Minister of External Office, Home Minister before becoming the Prime Minister of India. He was known for his honesty and humility through out his life. He was known as a man of principles. He was a politician who made no money for himself.

Examples of his various acts exhibiting his simplicity, honesty are many and we'll publicised for us to read and if possible to imbibe them in our lives. He was a man who walked tall and lived to be a true Indian.

Gulzari Lal Nanda a professor in economics was Vice Chairman of Planning Commission, Minister for Planning, Irrigation and Power. He became interim Prime Minister twice as is well known. He was a man of principles and never exploited his positions to benefit himself. When he died in the year 1998 at a ripe age of 99 years he was drawing a monthly stipend of Rs 500 as a freedom fighter. That was the greatness of this true Indian.

There are so many others whom readers know and possibly some of them are unsung heroes.

As we progress into the modern age where simplicity and honesty have slowly become rare commodities it is truly refreshing to find these traits in another great man who passed away recently -Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam.

There is a message doing rounds of late about his assets - a flat which had donated, three pairs of trousers and shirts and two suits but 2500 books of great value. It is said he even donated his pension towards the development of his village.

A true Indian indeed.

On the eve of our Independence Day apart from greeting our fellow Indians it is also good we try to imbibe the life styles of such great people in the truest sense who served their nation with all their might and with one goal: To keep our tri color flying high.

Salutations to such heroes and also to all those unsung heroes whom most of us do not know but did their might too to serve our great nation with a true Indian Spirit.

Jai Hind.
