The greatest lesson India taught the world through its struggle for freedom

“At the stroke of midnight, when the world sleeps, India will awaken to life and freedom”. Such insightful words said by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. And it is affirmative that, that was the moment India was truly born, ready to take on whatever came next, not just because of its independence, but also because that was when the people of India were truly prepared to take on the world .India is at its great level today because of its past. An intricate and compelling past which challenged the very barriers of humanity.

India had been under foreign powers for more than a 100 years yet there was no real outrage. The people had a notion in mind that things would never change. But things were destined to change. The right man came at the right time. Mahatma Gandhi. He was a man who brought the spark to ignite the whole nation for freedom. His belief and immense courage roused many dormant but talented minds in our country to do the same and to gain autonomy. But unlike other countries and their freedom struggles, India’s was going to stand out. Why? What was it that set India’s story apart from the rest of the world? The answer is simply beautiful. Non-violence. This was initiated by Gandhiji but it made no sense to his partners and most importantly to the whole nation but he convinced the country that freedom gained by bloodshed and tears would not be worth it .And he was absolutely right when he said that “An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind”. We showed the world that even after being belittled and tortured we would not reciprocate what they had done to us. We would not fight fire with fire. And till the end, we persevered and showed the world that the biggest weapon is to stay peaceful. Does it not make sense? It definitely does, in an enlightening way. But it is also impossible to ignore the fact that a country that was so divided would come together so quickly to be free in their motherland by such an unprecedented perspective of peace and love. The nation showed such strong unity. India is a country that is so rich and diverse in culture with more than a hundred languages and religions yet every single person sees themselves as an Indian before anything else. India has astonished the world by showing how a country with such diversity can come together more than countries with a single language and religion. India truly proved the phrase,” United we stand, divided we fall.”

This extensive struggle has made the nation what it is today. It is doubtful of where the country would stand without this massive endeavor. India allowed the one thing that could have possibly demolished it, to polish it. And that has made the remarkable and incredible country today that is proudly called, INDIA.
