Independence Day

Fida Ancy, IIK Young Reporter Wednesday, August 5, 2020
Independence Day

Our country India was not always like this. It was not a land where the citizens were allowed to choose their leaders. It was not a land where we were the ones holding the cards, where we had the power.

All those years under colonial rule were dark. The British ruled our country and we, the people of India, didn’t have a choice. Didn’t have any part in making the rules that were forced upon us.

But on 15th August 1947, freedom dawned upon us. After years of struggling against the British rule, the efforts of all our national heroes, our freedom fighters, had paid off.

Even then, it was not all smiles and joy. The partition of India and Pakistan was imminent and the citizens had a huge decision to make. It threw the entire subcontinent into chaos and confusion as people scrambled.

When e look back at those days, it is marvelous to behold how far we have come. The technological and scientific advancements and all the numerous amazing things our country has achieved.

Every Independence Day is a day of great celebration and enthusiasm. The Prime Minister of our country raises the Indian Flag in the Red Fort. Then of course, there is the speech highlighting the barriers we have overcome and the achievements of our country in the past year.

Our national anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’ is sung and after the speech, there is a march past of the Armed Forces and the Parliamentary forces.

Then, there are the parades. They showcase scenes from the independence struggle and India's diverse cultural traditions.

And all these celebrations not only take place in New Delhi, but also the state capitals. In fact, every Chief Minister unfurls the national flag and parades and pageants take place soon after.

But, it doesn’t end there. Independence Day is a national holiday; a day when each and every one of us value. Flag hosting ceremonies and celebrations are conducted in institutions and schools throughout the country to honor our freedom fighters as well as our freedom.

Looking back at those dark days, the India we have now wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and courage of so many freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for our country. Independence Day is a day to remember that sacrifice and carry the love for our country in our hearts forever.

Happy Independence Day and Jai Hind!
