Bus drivers face continuous attacks from young Arabs: Reports Al Watan daily

Originally published by Al Watan Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Al Watan daily carries the story of harassment and brutal attacks faced by the drivers of public buses, which explains the helplessness of the drivers, most of them are Indians. Bus commuters urge police authorities to look into the concern of the alarming increase in the number of reported and unreported cases of bus drivers being beaten and left bruised if not bloodied from blows and attacks inflicted by high school Arab students who board their buses and terrorize passengers verbally and physically, Al Watan staff reports. Passengers express dismay over police authorities' apathy in solving the issues despite repetitive calls to resolve and protect passengers and drivers, reports added.

In series of news published in local dailies described four Arab teenagers attacked an Indian bus driver when he asked for their fares. He claimed that the passengers watched in horror as they dragged him out of the bus, where he was beaten repeatedly, the teenagers escaped immediately after the assault. The driver was brought to the Adan Hospital for treatment. Until this day his attackers have not been identified. In a similar situation, local news daily published that an Asian bus driver was attacked by young students when he refused to let them board the bus. Police authorities arrived in the scene and paramedics reported that the driver suffered multiple bruises and head trauma. The driver claimed that he refused to let the students board his vehicle as they vandalize, scare and insult passengers and in a few cases, physically attack. Till today his assailants have not been identified.

Al Watan daily did an interview with one of the bus driver Ramesh, who said that most bus drivers have complained about the harsh and offending actions young Arab passengers have displayed while inside the buses thus, many have refused to let them in their buses. "I was hit on the head by a stone and four windows of the bus broke due to stones being thrown by teenage students because we refuse to let them board. There has to be a system in such a way that drivers will have a link to the nearest police station should such incident arise. Many suggested that a glass box should be built around the driver for protection, but what about the safety of the passengers who often are preys to these thugs?" questioned Ramesh.

Bus drivers complain about loud voices such as singing, dancing and smoking inside the buses and in many occasions seat covers were torn and bus interiors were vandalized."I was attacked once by these students as I stopped the bus and requested them to refrain from smoking and not to disturb the women. In seconds as I turned my back, I was repeatedly hit on the back and as I drove away, two of my windows were smashed. I try to avoid them in many occasions and have recommended our bus company be given authority not to allow students inside our buses," bus driver Vijay told to Al Watan.

Most of these incidences are some of the minor actions done by students inside the buses and drivers appeal to proper authorities to find appropriate solutions to discipline unmannered students or commuters. Similarly, passengers complain that all these incidences have been going on and yet no one bothered to raise the issues. Bus companies should assist in working out solutions to protect their own drivers and maintain comfort and safety among their passengers.

"I don't know how they can go to school and come out of it at the end of the day with these attitudes. In several instances, drivers find themselves helpless. I have witnessed some of them being hit on the face and disturbed while driving. Some even demanded drivers to stop on the road regardless of bus stops and if he refused to comply they stepped on the break," added bus driver Subramaniam.

To add, Subramaniam added that several drivers admit that they are helpless as they watch these students harass commuters inside their buses. "They step in the bus and start to act wildly and uncontrollably and cause uneasiness, which often force passengers to get off the vehicle," added the bus driver. Subramaniam complained that most of these students for some reasons do not respect anyone regardless of age or gender. He has witnessed rude actions such as pouring soft drinks and tipping-off cigarette ashes over passenger's head as well as sitting with women in front and disturbs them. Subramaniam added that these unruly acts often occur after school hours and at times during busy hours in the evening.

"We are aware of the problems and have witnessed the seriousness of the issues raised by our drivers, we are in fact considering banning students from our buses after school hours and will consult with public transport authorities to find appropriate solutions to these problems," stated a representative from private bus company who requests anonymity.

"The issue is not whether these students should be allowed to use the bus or not, but proper authorities and bus companies should come to terms and work together to educate students the importance of these public transportations on their daily routines," added source from public transportation company.

Al Watan Daily interviewed a few students who shared disgust over the attitudes of some bullies that generally affect reputations of students who simply want to get home. "I have witnessed such brutality in the bus and took pity on the driver and some passengers who were helpless from insults and vulgar acts being performed against them. These young brats simply want to show off and brag and unfortunately Asian passengers are easy preys. I have seen these boys kick the door repeatedly and hit drivers with their books or bags as they get off, then they run off and escape from the place, leaving local authorities with no head or tail as to who caused such commotion. I don't blame drivers as to why they refuse to let high school and young passengers in their buses, who would anyway, if what they bring is problems to passengers and drivers?" commented high school student Sharif.

FIRST OF ALL YOU SHOULD KNOW NO PASSENGERS SITTING IN BUS ARE COWARDS WHETHER THEY ARE INDIANS, PHILIPINOS, MASRIES AND ETC. NOW THE PROBLEM IS THAT IF YOU TOUCH THEM OR BEAT THEM YU ARE GOING TO LAND IN PROBLEM YOURSELF BECAUSE AS A EXPRIATES PEOPLE KNOW THAT KNOW WILL HELP THEM FOR E.G THEIR EMABSSIES OR SPONCERS SO THEY AVOID GETTING INTO CONFLICT. MOREOVER PEOPLE TRAVELLING BY BUSES ARE ON THE JOBS AND ANY THING YOU DO AGAINST THE LOCALS OR GOVT THERE ARE CHANCES YOU WILL BE SACKED EVEN IF YU ARE RIGHT SO IN VIEW OF THIS PEOPLE KEEP QUIET. THIS IS THE MAIN REASON FOR PEOPLE KEEP QUIET OTHERWISE IF THE LAW WAS NOT PARTIAL NOBODY WILL ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN NOT ONLY IN BUSES EVEN ON ROADS AND OTHER PUBLIC PLACES

Solutions
1) Arm bus drivers with taser guns.
2) Complusory camera recording on all buses.
3) The bus companies should provide student id smart cards, students can only enter the bus provided they swipe these cards. This can help in identifying the culprits.
4)Drivers should not allow students to enter from the back door.

All these public transport bus should fix camera and record all such incident. Then those Public transport company's Masri management will realize and approach CID police with those recorded tapes.
Feeling pity on those Indian drivers.

we have also faced the same problem with us. we three friends were going by bus in evening about 7pm.this kuwaiti kids were in group 5-6 sited on back seat. 3-4 Philippians young girls were also in bus on first two seats. just after bus started from mangaf this guys started shouting using abbusing words and scarred all passengers. after that to show off to girls, one of them was tring to open hydraulic door of bus with hands and hanging half outside from bus.after that they tried to beat one of our friends head. we stayed calm and didn't reacted, they keep shouting with face on us standing in front.after some time bus stop of fahaheel came and quickly without giving chance we stepped out of bus and run away. we don't know what happened to others in bus and that girls. After that we decided not to travel in bus. seriously kuwaiti parents should look on this.. or they will face hard time with uncultured next generation.. For us avoiding bus is the only way out. i heard from some one here that even if police find this guys than also they dont dare to punish them with excuse they are small kids...really horrible

Why dont they just simply instal hidden cameras inside buses.. this will allow authorities to identify those guys very easily..which will create a second thought on those youngster's minds before repeating same mistake.

The best acceptable solution is fix three four strong chain with hooks in every bus and such trouble makers should be locked with it by the Driver and passengers together and taken to the nearest Police Station. Can the authorities authorize this or issue gun to the Asians for self defence.

WE ARE VERY COWARDS...AND WE NEED TO GIVE THEM A SEVERE PUNISHMENT IN THE SAME TIME. ALL KUWAITIS ARE THINKING WE ARE BEGGERS...WE HAVE TO SHOW OUR POWER BY GIVING THEM PUNISHMENT..BUT WE ARE NOT DOING SUCH A WAY BECOZ WE ARE ONLY LOOKING FOR THEM SELVES.THIS SELFISH SHOULD BE AVOIDED.WE HAVE TO BE UNITY ALWAYS THEN WE WILL FUK THEM ....

i agree to India driver what they are suffering from these Arab Students.

Same time I recalled my school days, these- especially kerala drivers not allowing to enter the bus,and pushing and beating the school children. if any school children questioned they will handle physically, even if it is lady. if any student seated the bus employee start verbal abuse.

They are getting the renumeration what they did past. but I am felt sorry to these drivers.

This has been happening for years. This is not the 1st time in kuwait. I was born here & educated here. I have seen this happening in KPTC in those days since 1982. Imagine that now. Till now no changes other than more buses have come in competition & the attitudes of these arab bully kids havent changed with all this technology available now in this world. They must put cameras in the bus & educate on video in the bus the consequences by punishments are harsh

This is called the "In born Culture" We cannot change it.Only thing to suffer....Because everybody want to be on safe side, so they will not react on any vulger things happening in front of them. There are so many incidents in buses towards fahaheel from Kuwait city.Authorities should act on this issues.Ultimately majority of the employees are depending on public transport systems and these peoples are working for this nation. So this should be considered immediately

The parents and the teachers must be ashamed they don't know how to grow kids, forget at home they brought up with a maid, even in the school teachers don't teach anything good to them, they don't teach how to respect elders, infact the teachers who take 100's of dinars as salary comes to school to pass their time, especially in govt schools i have witnessed personally, the teachers are waiting for the bell when it will ring before the children, in the school the teachers sleep on the bench and children will be playing eating do what ever they want i have never seen a teacher ever shout at them.

In and around Abbasiya.. In the Bus..In the souks....

So much happening everywhere.... .. where are the rulers, the law creators.. the senior heads of the Criminal dept, Police .. etc etc...

Is it that anything can happen to any asian anywhere in Kuwait.. the culprit is free to do his will without any fear? Higher authorities have to take an action VERY FAST..

the best solution is fixing a camera inside the bus or else passengers should record this kinda incident and it should be given to the respective authority.. I faced this issue once and slapped the stupid in front of everyone.. Its easy to control them and passengers should be united to give a bang back to them..

My personal opinion is let all students should carry a pass from the transport companies such as KPTC, CITY and KGL. It is the vital evidence for the students and as well as the transport company. Prior to boarding these passes should be scanned in the machine in which the tickets are being issued.

Any act of harassment or attack or misbehaving will be caught automatically by registering bus pass. Also a tracking camera is advisable in the bus.

i am really sorry to hear about such incidents are occuring in Kuwait.

1. Special Cabin with fully protected CAbin for Driver as in UK, US ...etc.

2. Fix Minimum 3 Cameras to watch the movement of the Passangers, Driver and his driving.

Both of the Above things can be done from the Transportation Company.

have witnessed such a thing with my own eye ..... and at times these kids are merely between 9-15yrs of age sometimes they are older .....it intially starts with them screaming shouting and distrubing other passengers and if the diriver tries to stopped them they beat him up....why is it so that no action is taken on them is it coz they are from this coutry itself if a similiar thing would ahve been done by another nationality they would be beaten up and deported ....

The best thing is when they arrive in bus better the driver must take the bus to near police station, or all the passenger must come in one unit and beat them so brutally, and send them to hospital, this only one solution to take action on them.

The parents of these guys are the culprits. Its they who have to teach discipline and ethics of life with thier children. This type of attitude will make them go to hell. Indian embassy should intervene in this issue. And there should be one complaint office where the cummuters and the drivers can complaint about the harassment they are receiving from these guys. I also agree with leslie. This is a very serious issue and cannot get along with these anymore.

A CIVIL DRESSED VANDALISM SQUAD POLICE DEDICATED EVEN SPORADIC CHECKS TO DETER AND ENHANCE VIGILANCE OVER THE HOODLUMS AND DETAINED THEM

IN ADDITION TO ABOVE
ADD A CAM TO THE BUS INTERIOR IN INCONSPICUOUS LOCATION. I AM NOT SURE OF HOW FAR IT WILL DETER AS THEY CAN EASILY VANDALIZE, BUT WORTH MENTIONING..

JUVENILE DELINQUENTS SHULD BE DEALT WITH ZERO TOLERANCE AND NO LAXITY PLUS SHULD THEY (AND THEIR PARENTS) SHULD MAKE THE HEAVY MONETARY COMPENSATION FOR THE CRIME ON PUBLIC ASSETS, HUMANS INVOLVED WHICH WILL ASCERTAIN PARENTS TO TAKE THIS UP AS AN ALARMING ISSUE AND NOT A ISSUE TO BE OVERLOOKED

GOVT TO CREATE SPECIAL COUNCIL CELL TO RECORD VICTIMS GRIEVANCES

GOVT VIA SCHOOLS SHULD START AWARENESS PROGRAMS & GROUP GUIDANCE MEETINGS TO TEACH HUMANITY TO THIS SCHOOL-GOERS AND NOT GO ASTRAY. A ED SYSTEM WHERE STUDENTS EVALUATE AND REFLECT ON THEIR OWN BEHAVIOR

I think the authorities have given special status to students so they dont bother to take any action. The police should take strict action against these brats and call for their parents to come to the station and sign an undertaking for good conduct. Drivers should be given walkie talkie to contact their office time to time. Or have camera fit in the buses that will wipe out this menance for ever.

dont allow childrens to travel without ticket, these arab childrens are creating toomuch problems, spiting from backseat and from the window also. they are thinking indians/asians are animals. please complaint through our indian embassy. Here lot of associations are here , they can also do something against this type of problems.

The Embassy Should involve in this issue. because major cases are reported with Asian drivers especially with Indians. or our Association has to take this issue in front of the Kuwait Authorities. this the only solution.

One day I saw a bangladeshi man attacked in the KPTC bus by some teenegers here in abu-halifa area. Normally this teenagers are sitting on the backside of the buses they will sit quite at the beginnig time after bus will start they will do the malpractice like burning the seats by fire ,smoking, singing, dancing & looting money also its very shame. Please Indiansinkuwait can help to solve this problem they want to show up this complaint to the concerned authorities or just to add a live camera in the bus to understand the face of the local teenegers then police can arrest them.

Several times I am also a witness of this kind incidents in public bus services ... Most of the time the victims are Indians.. So please race this issue by the Indian Govt. to the Kuwait authorities. The harassment and threatening are severe than the Indians experienced in Australia. So Indian authorities should consider on this matter very seriously more over these kind of youngsters are very dangerous for the future of Kuwait security..

This is a long time issue, which has never been addressed. I have faced these type of bullies in bus long ago when I used to travel by bus. Authorities have to take pragmatic steps to stop such bullying. And clearly such type of behavior shows what these students are being taught at school.
