Recently, if you observe the weather outside, it is getting pretty erratic. With sandstorms, strong winds and numerous changes in weather day by day, it has become difficult to trust the weather reports in Kuwait. But has anyone wondered the cause of these changes?

The possible answer, the root of all problems, appears to be one- global warming and its effects. Here in Kuwait people use fuel lavishly and for a good reason too- the cost of fuel is low compared to other countries, especially India. Every person has car, which in turn contributes to more pollution. As you may have heard, global warming is the phenomenon due to which excess of carbon dioxide leads to adverse effects due to trapping of heat. Climate is affected adversely. Here in Kuwait due to lack of greenery and excess of cars and industrials, the overall effect on Kuwait's climatic condition is drastic. If you have noticed, winters are getting colder and longer, springs shorter, and summers warmer. In 2000 itself, there were some 552,400 passenger cars, and 167,800 commercial taxis, trucks, and buses in use. Imagine the rise that could happen in 12 years. The pollution level in Kuwait is 123 ug/m3. It is in the 10th position of the world's most polluted countries by CNBC. Local residents are reported to suffer from high rates of respiratory diseases such as asthma, cancer and skin conditions.

THE SOLUTION

What can we do to save ourselves? Obviously the whole problem cannot be cured in a day but we can make the condition around Kuwait better. Adopt car pooling and adopt walking for short distances. It is a good exercise and it is a step closer to becoming the ecological hero you want to be. Try to plant trees and plants in your neighborhood. This will make the air around cleaner and refreshing.

Let us change our lifestyle and adopt a better and greener lifestyle. First change the neighborhood, then the country and then the world. We, the future generation has to put our foot forward, and drive the initiative of providing to ourselves a greener, healthier earth to live in.
