Kuwait would require 2.7 million doses of meningitis vaccine

Al Watan Saturday, January 7, 2012

Seeing as the population of Kuwait reaches a total of about 3 million people, the country would need approximately 2.7 million doses of meningitis vaccine as there are only 250,000 doses currently in the country, reports Al Watan daily.

Sources at the Ministry of Health said that it is expected to provide the vaccine to all people living in Kuwait, as large numbers of people have visited medical clinics demanding to be vaccinated, mainly in Farwaniya, daily added.

The sources said that medical clinics in the Farwaniya area have already issued the vaccine to 5,000 workers on Thursday as a precautionary measure. The sources ruled out reports that the disease could be "epidemic" because the disease is under control, noting that it is not necessary to give the vaccine to all citizens, but it is better to give the vaccine to the elderly and those suffering from chronic diseases.

In the same vein, Ministry of Health's Assistant Undersecretary for Technical Affairs Dr. Khaled Al-Sahlawi said to Al Watan that the situation is under control. He added that only four "suspected" cases are currently receiving medical treatment at Farwaniya hospital, Mubarak Al-Kabeer and Amiri hospitals. He said that generally people suffer from simple fevers or colds but that they panic, believing that they suffer from meningitis.
