Ramadan-an Inestimable Gift

Posted on 5/14/2018

Ramadan is a month of blessing and spreading love amongst each other. It is regarded as the holiest month, as on this day the Quran was divulged to Prophet Muhammad. People greet each other by saying ‘Ramadan Kareem’. Ramadan lasts for one complete moon cycle. Adult Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, reciting verses until the Quran is completed by Eid Al Fitr. These prayers are called Taraweeh prayer. They fast as they believe that, by fasting they can receive redemption from their sins. The fast may be broken at sunset. Dates are usually the first food to be consumed. The fast-breaking meal is called Iftar. The fast starts early in the morning. In Kuwait, the Kuwaitis give donations to many orphanages; they go shopping, to amusement parks and beaches. There are also small camps which offer meals to people who are in need of proper food. The Kuwaiti people evoke the past with all its beautiful details – from the traditional costumes and dishes, to the special Ramadan celebrations held nowadays. They have preserved their traditional rituals and ensure that these customs continue. They also have get-togethers where they meet with friends and relatives discussing various pressing issues in their Dewaniya. The Kuwaitis have perpetuated their traditional foods, the most important being Al-Harees. It is made of mashed wheat with meat, to which a mixture of sugar and clarified butter with ground cinnamon is added before serving. Another popular dish that is served at Iftaar in every household is At-Tashreeb, which is a yeast bread cut into small pieces, with gravy containing gourd, potatoes and dry lemons from Oman. The Luqmat Al-Qaadi is made of milk, cardamom, butter, saffron and fermented dough cut into small bite-size balls and fried in boiling fat until they redden, then placed in sugar syrup or molasses. Special Kuwaiti sweets include Az-Zalabyah, Al-Luqaymaat, Al-Ghurayyibah and Baydh Al-Quttah. During the Last Ten Nights of Ramadan, around 180,000 people attend the Grand Mosque to pray the Taraaweeh prayers. Ramadan is the time when people give up their enmity and live together as a family. They give up their bad practices like smoking, laziness and cunningness. Let us develop the feeling of brotherhood in ourselves and live a peaceful life.

Ramadan Kareem to all!!
