Both are excellent!
Boils down to your preference!
I prefer Canon to Nikon!
But that's just my preference.
Nikon is an excellent DSLR as well.
With regards to model, there are so many models ..... depends on what you are going to do with the camera.
Cost factor will go up with added features ..... different models have different features .....
Ultimately depends on what you want to do with your Camera!
If it is point and shoot only, your phone camera would be good enough.

It depends on your level of expertise in photography..DSLR cameras vary in so many range.. To answer your basic question, Canon or Nikon.,?They both are almost the same quality, with Nikon having an edge over Canon..
Operating a Canon is easier than a Nikon.. Nikon has various complex features which professionals will find useful..
If u re a beginner who is looking for a DSLR just to capture the moments like functions, parties and some good moments, you can go for the basic models like Canon 1200D, Canon 1100D or Canon 600D which is a little advanced, but available cheap nowadays.. Nikon 3300 D is also a good option...
If u are an aspiring photographer, then u will need a higher version which has many features.. The more manually u work on Cameras, the better photographer u become..
Most of the cameras come with the 18-55 mm Lens, which is the basic lens model, good enough to capture things within a room or hall.. For better zooming options, go for 18-200 mm or 30-250 mm lenses..
Practice makes u perfect.. there are so many youtube videos where u can learn the features of these cameras and utilize them to their maximum potential..

@Kodak - why does it hurt u ?? Because he can afford a DSLR and u cant... people like u can just feel jealous of others and their success.. u keep taking pics with ur mobile..while the others will grow in their lives !

Ram Both these companies make various models and great cameras. I suggest you look at the models that are available and read expert reviews on the internet. I bought Canon EOS700D with 75-300 type lens and we love it....its brilliant... here are few suggestions from my own experience - 1. go and take a good look at the demo cameras in some shop 2. lens is more important than the actual body 3. its generally relatively heavier than the normal cameras. so its an item that you have to carry. 4. Make sure you invest in a good quality carry bag that keeps the costly item safe and secure
5. if you are upgrading from standard compact camera - you could try Bridge cameras. Sony has few good quality bridge cameras...if you dont know this type , just google it and you know what it means
Enjoy photography...a good quality camera is a lot of fun and also adds quality to your memories.
